Arcee, a U.S. startup with a team of 26 individuals, has developed a groundbreaking open source Language Model (LLM) with 400 billion parameters. With a budget of $20 million, Arcee has unveiled its latest creation, the Trinity Large Thinking model, which the company claims is the most capable open-weight model ever produced by a non-Chinese company.
Arcee’s mission is to provide U.S. and Western enterprises with an alternative to Chinese-based models, which are often viewed as risky due to concerns about data security and governmental control. Arcee’s model offers companies the flexibility to customize and deploy it on-site or access it through Arcee’s cloud-hosted version via API.
While Arcee’s models are not yet surpassing those of industry giants like Anthropic or OpenAI, they provide users with a sense of independence from the dictates of these larger entities. Notably, Arcee’s model has gained traction among users of the open source AI agent tool OpenClaw, with data from OpenRouter indicating that it has become one of the top models utilized with OpenClaw.
However, the recent decision by Anthropic to require additional payments for OpenClaw usage has caused discontent among users, prompting some to explore alternatives, with OpenAI emerging as a notable competitor in this space following the departure of OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger to the company.
