Amazon has announced that starting on May 20th, 2026, Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will lose the ability to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store. Amazon spokesperson Jackie Burke confirmed this update, stating that users can still access previously downloaded books and manage their accounts through alternative means.
The affected devices range from the original Kindle launched in 2007 to the Kindle Fire HD versions from 2012. Users of these devices should be aware that after the May deadline, deregistered or factory reset devices cannot be re-registered.
Amazon plans to inform impacted users via email, detailing the restrictions that will apply to their older devices. While Kindle e-readers and pre-2012 Kindle Fire tablets will face limitations concerning book downloads, other applications and Amazon services will remain functional on these devices.
For users considering an upgrade to newer Kindle hardware, Amazon is offering a 20 percent discount on new devices and a $20 ebook credit upon upgrading. This offer is valid until June 20th, 2026. Users can transfer their previous purchases to new devices by logging into their existing accounts.
This move signals Amazon’s focus on encouraging users to transition to more modern Kindle models. The incentives provided aim to facilitate a smooth transition for loyal customers while ensuring continued access to their purchased content.
