Amazon has announced that as of May 20th, 2026, Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer have access to new content from the Kindle Store. Users of these older devices will retain the ability to read previously downloaded books but will not be able to purchase or borrow new titles through the store. If these devices are deregistered or reset after the deadline, re-registration will not be possible.
The affected devices include the original Kindle from 2007, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, and early Kindle Fire models such as Kindle Fire 1st Gen, Kindle Fire 2nd Gen, Kindle Fire HD 7, and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 from 2011 and 2012.
Amazon plans to inform impacted users via email before the deadline, outlining the restrictions on their older devices. To encourage transitioning to newer Kindle hardware, Amazon will offer a 20% discount on new devices along with a $20 ebook credit upon upgrade, valid until June 20th, 2026. Despite content limitations on pre-2012 Kindle Fire devices, other apps and Amazon services on these devices will remain unaffected.
Longtime users looking to upgrade are advised to log in with their existing accounts to access their previous purchases seamlessly on new devices. This move marks a change in Amazon’s support strategy for legacy Kindle devices, promoting a transition towards more recent hardware for an enhanced reading experience.
